Is a QHD 1440p monitor worth it over 1080p for gaming in South Africa?

For most gamers, yes. QHD (2560x1440) has roughly 78% more pixels than 1080p, so images and text look noticeably sharper on 27" and 32" screens without the heavy GPU demand of 4K. Paired with a current-generation mid-range GPU or better, 1440p delivers high frame rates and crisp detail, which is why it is the most popular resolution for SA gaming builds.

What GPU do I need to run 1440p at high refresh rates?

A current-generation mid-range card (a 60-class GPU, e.g. an RTX 5060 or comparable AMD Radeon) handles 1440p at high settings and 100+ FPS in most titles. For 144-240Hz esports frame rates or maxed settings in demanding games, step up to a 70- or 80-class card. The monitor only shows the frames your GPU produces, so match the refresh rate to the card.

Which is better for a 1440p monitor: IPS, VA or OLED?

IPS is the versatile all-rounder, with accurate colour, wide viewing angles and fast response for gaming and creative work. VA gives deeper contrast and blacks, suiting films and atmospheric games. OLED offers true blacks, per-pixel contrast and the fastest response for a premium experience at a higher price. Most gamers choose IPS or OLED; contrast-focused users often prefer VA.

Do I need DisplayPort or HDMI for 1440p high-refresh gaming?

On a PC, DisplayPort 1.4 comfortably drives 1440p up to 240Hz and is the standard choice for high-refresh gaming. HDMI 2.1 is useful for high-refresh output from consoles such as the Xbox Series X. Check that both your monitor and graphics card have a matching port and the bandwidth for your target refresh rate.

What is FreeSync and G-Sync, and do I need it?

FreeSync (AMD) and G-Sync (NVIDIA) are adaptive-sync technologies that match the monitor's refresh rate to your GPU's frame rate, eliminating tearing and stutter for smoother gameplay. Many current QHD monitors support both. It is not essential, but it noticeably improves the experience, so match the standard to your graphics card where possible.

Can a PS5 or Xbox Series X use a 1440p 144Hz monitor?

The Xbox Series X natively supports 1440p and can reach 120Hz on compatible monitors over HDMI 2.1. The PS5 also supports 1440p output on compatible displays. For the best console experience, look for a monitor with HDMI 2.1 and confirmed 1440p high-refresh support rather than relying on upscaling.

Does buying a QHD monitor locally in South Africa help with delivery and support?

Yes. Buying from a local SA retailer like Evetech means faster delivery, local warranty and straightforward RMA support if anything goes wrong, versus importing. Stock is held in the country, so availability and after-sales service are handled domestically rather than through overseas channels.

Q: Should I get a 27" or 32" QHD monitor?

A 27" QHD monitor gives a dense, sharp image (about 109 PPI) and is the sweet spot for a single-screen gaming or work desk. A 32" QHD monitor spreads the same resolution over a larger area for a more immersive, spacious feel, favoured by creators and sim or strategy players. Choose 27" for closer seating, 32" if you have more desk depth.

QHD (2560x1440) sits between Full HD and 4K: roughly 78% more pixels than 1080p for sharper text, more usable desktop space and finer game detail, while staying far easier to drive than 4K. On a 27" or 32" panel it is the resolution most SA gamers and creators settle on. Choose by panel type (IPS for colour and speed, VA for contrast, OLED for the deepest blacks), refresh rate (from 100Hz up to 240Hz), and whether you need FreeSync or G-Sync to match a current-generation NVIDIA RTX or AMD Radeon GPU.

How to Choose a QHD 1440p Monitor in South Africa

A good 1440p monitor is a balance of five things: panel technology, refresh rate, size, adaptive sync and your GPU. Fast-paced competitive players lean toward high-refresh IPS or OLED panels at 27"; creators and productivity users often prefer a colour-accurate IPS panel, sometimes at 32" for extra workspace. The right choice depends on what your graphics card can push and what you actually do at the desk.

Refresh rate is how many frames per second the screen can display. For everyday work and single-player games, 100-144Hz is smooth and easy to drive. Competitive FPS players benefit from 165-240Hz for lower motion blur and quicker on-screen response. Remember the panel only shows what your GPU produces, so pair a 240Hz screen with a card that can actually hit those frame rates at 1440p.

IPS gives the best colour accuracy and wide viewing angles with fast response, making it the all-round pick for gaming and creative work. VA offers deeper contrast and darker blacks, which suits movies and atmospheric single-player games, but response can be slower. OLED delivers true blacks, per-pixel contrast and near-instant response for the most premium experience, at a higher price and with care needed around static elements.

At 1440p, a 27" panel gives a sharp, dense image (about 109 pixels per inch) and is the popular sweet spot for a single-monitor desk. A 32" panel spreads the same resolution over a larger area for a more immersive, spacious feel that many creators and sim/strategy players prefer, with slightly lower pixel density. Consider your viewing distance: 27" suits closer seating, 32" rewards a little more space.

Adaptive sync matches the monitor's refresh to your GPU's frame rate, removing screen tearing and stutter for smoother gameplay. AMD Radeon cards use FreeSync; NVIDIA RTX cards use G-Sync, and many modern panels are certified for both. Check that the monitor's sync standard lines up with your graphics card, and confirm the supported refresh range covers the frame rates you play at.

For 1440p high-refresh gaming on a PC, DisplayPort 1.4 handles up to 240Hz comfortably; HDMI 2.1 adds high-refresh support for consoles like the Xbox Series X. USB-C with power delivery is handy if you dock a laptop, and a built-in KVM lets you drive one screen from two machines. Creators should also look for stated sRGB or DCI-P3 coverage and factory calibration for colour-critical work.

Match the monitor to the machine. A current-generation mid-range GPU (a 60-class card, e.g. an RTX 5060) comfortably drives 1440p at high refresh in most titles; a higher tier (a 70- or 80-class card) unlocks max settings and higher frame rates. Below is a factor-by-factor guide to narrow it down.
