What force-feedback type should I choose in a sim racing wheel?

It depends on budget and how competitive you are. Gear-driven wheels are the cheapest entry point with lighter feedback. Belt-driven wheels feel smoother and stronger for mid-range money. Direct-drive wheels connect the rim straight to the motor for the sharpest, most powerful feedback and are what most serious racers use. Casual players are well served by gear or belt; lap-time chasers should budget for direct drive.

Do I need a load-cell brake for sim racing?

Not to start, but it makes a real difference. Standard pedals measure how far you press the brake, while a load-cell measures how hard you press, which matches real braking and makes threshold braking far more consistent. Beginners can race happily on the pedals included with an entry wheel, then upgrade to a load-cell set as they get more competitive.

Will a sim racing wheel work on both PC and console?

Almost all wheels work on PC, but console support is licensed separately. A wheel certified for Xbox may not run on PlayStation and vice versa, so buy for the console you own. If you race across platforms, look for a base that lists both consoles or plan to use it on PC. Always check the wheel's supported platforms before buying.

What brands of sim racing gear does Evetech stock?

Evetech carries the main sim racing brands in South Africa, including Logitech and Thrustmaster for entry and mid-tier wheels, and Fanatec and MOZA for direct-drive bases, wheel rims, pedals and accessories. This covers everything from a first gear-driven wheel to a full modular cockpit setup, all with local warranty and nationwide delivery.

Do I need a cockpit, or is a wheel stand enough?

A wheel stand is enough for lighter and mid-tier wheels and folds away when not in use. Once you move to a strong direct-drive base, the forces can flex or shift a lightweight mount, so a rigid wheel stand rated for that torque or a full cockpit with a fixed seat is worth it. Clamping to a desk works for entry gear but tends to slip under hard braking.

How many pedals do I need for sim racing?

Two pedals (throttle and brake) cover most modern racing where you shift with paddles, which suits the majority of players. Add a third pedal (a clutch) if you want to drive H-pattern manual cars or heel-and-toe. Check that any upgraded pedal set is compatible with your wheel base before buying.

Can I upgrade my sim racing setup over time?

Yes. Sim gear is modular, and direct-drive ecosystems from Fanatec and MOZA let you swap wheel rims and add pedals, shifters, handbrakes and button plates over time. Starting on a base with a broad accessory range gives you the best upgrade path, whereas simple all-in-one wheels are harder to expand later.

Sim Racing Gear for PC & Console

A proper sim racing rig comes down to three parts: a force-feedback wheel, a solid pedal set and something rigid to bolt them to. Evetech stocks the full range in South Africa, from Logitech and Thrustmaster starter wheels to belt-driven mid-tier sets and direct-drive bases from Fanatec and MOZA. Match the force-feedback type to how serious you are, check that the wheel supports your platform (PC, Xbox or PlayStation), and mount everything to a cockpit or wheel stand so it holds firm under braking. Everything here is covered by local warranty and nationwide delivery.

How to Choose Sim Racing Gear

The wheel is where your budget decides your experience. Gear-driven wheels are the affordable entry point; belt-driven units feel smoother and quieter; direct-drive bases connect the motor straight to the wheel for the sharpest, strongest feedback and are what most competitive racers move to. Beyond the wheel, a good pedal set (ideally with a load-cell brake) and a rigid mounting solution matter more than most beginners expect.

Gear-driven wheels use plastic or metal gears and are the cheapest way in, with lighter, slightly notchy feedback. Belt-driven wheels run the motor through belts for smoother, quieter and stronger forces at mid-range prices. Direct-drive wheels mount the rim straight onto the motor shaft, giving the fastest, most detailed and most powerful feedback measured in Nm of torque. If you race casually, gear or belt is plenty; if you chase lap times, direct drive is the upgrade that matters most.

Entry wheels ship with two-pedal (throttle and brake) sets using potentiometers, which measure how far you press. Serious racers upgrade to a load-cell brake, which measures how hard you press instead, mimicking a real brake pedal and giving far more consistent threshold braking. Look for three-pedal sets with a clutch if you want to heel-and-toe or drive H-pattern cars, and check that the pedals are compatible with your wheel base.

Clamping a wheel to a desk works for lighter gear but flexes and slips once forces climb, especially with direct drive. A wheel stand is a compact, foldable frame for the wheel and pedals. A full cockpit adds a fixed seat and rigid rails, staying planted under hard braking and letting you dial in seat and pedal position. Match the mount to your base: strong direct-drive units need a stiff cockpit or a stand rated for the torque.

Almost every sim wheel works on PC, but console support is licensed. A wheel certified for Xbox may not work on PlayStation and vice versa, so buy for the console you own, or a PC-only base if you only race on PC. Check the specific titles too, since a few racing games have limited wheel support. If you switch platforms often, look for a base that lists both consoles, or plan to race that title on PC.

Sim gear is modular, so the base you buy determines what you can add later. Direct-drive ecosystems from Fanatec and MOZA let you swap wheel rims, add different pedal sets, handbrakes, shifters and button plates over time. Cheaper all-in-one wheels are simpler but harder to expand. If you expect the hobby to stick, starting on a base with a broad accessory range saves you replacing the whole setup later.

Before buying, confirm three things: platform compatibility (a wheel locked to PlayStation won't work on Xbox, though most run on PC), the force-feedback type your budget allows, and where you'll mount it. Bolting to a wheel stand or cockpit eliminates the flex and slipping you get from clamping to a desk.
