What AppleCare+ for Mac actually covers

AppleCare+ for Mac extends your standard one-year hardware warranty out to three years from the original Mac purchase date, and adds accidental damage protection on top. In South Africa it covers the following:

• Unlimited hardware repairs for manufacturing defects — logic board, display, keyboard top case, ports, speakers, the lot.
• Battery service if your Mac's battery capacity drops below 80% of original within the three years.
• Two accidental damage incidents every 12 months — each subject to a service fee: R1 999 for screen-only damage on a MacBook, R4 999 for "other" damage (liquid, drops, structural). Fees correct at time of writing and tend to creep up.
• 24/7 Apple Support via chat and phone for both hardware and software questions.
• Battery, keyboard, charger replacements bundled into the unlimited hardware repair clause when the failure is Apple's responsibility.

What it doesn't cover in SA: theft and loss. Apple offers theft & loss cover as a higher AppleCare+ tier for iPhone in South Africa, but as of 2026 that tier is not available for Mac locally. Cosmetic damage that doesn't affect function (scratches, dents) is also excluded — those are on you.

AppleCare+ pricing in South Africa (2026)

Apple sets ZAR pricing for AppleCare+ centrally — iStore, Digicape, iStore Business and Evetech all list the same RRPs. As of mid-2026 the bands look like this:

Two SA-specific notes: pricing flexes with the rand, so the actual at-till number can drift R200-R500 either way through the year. And Apple occasionally runs a 10-15% AppleCare+ discount during back-to-school or November sales — if you can wait, that's a meaningful saving on an R10 000 policy.

What Mac repairs cost in SA without AppleCare+

This is where the maths gets uncomfortable. iStore is the only first-party Apple service operator in South Africa, and out-of-warranty quotes reflect Apple's parts pricing plus iStore's labour. Here's what we've seen on actual customer quotes in 2025-2026:

A few of these need context. The logic board number is brutal because on Apple Silicon Macs, the SSD and RAM are soldered to the logic board — a single failed solder joint means replacing the whole assembly, and a "logic board" on a kitted-out MacBook Pro 16 can be a R20 000+ part. Liquid damage often gets quoted as logic board replacement plus top-case plus battery, which is how a single coffee spill becomes a R20 000 quote.

The cost-vs-benefit math

Here's the framing we use when customers ask "is it actually worth it for me?"

The break-even calculation on a MacBook Pro 14 with R8 500 AppleCare+:

• Scenario A — zero incidents: you spent R8 500. Net loss vs not buying it.
• Scenario B — one screen incident (Year 2): R8 500 + R1 999 fee = R10 499 total. Without AC+, the same repair is R13 000+. You're R2 500+ ahead, plus you got 3 years of priority support.
• Scenario C — one screen + one liquid (Year 1 + Year 3): R8 500 + R1 999 + R4 999 = R15 498. Without AC+, those two repairs total R28 000+. You're R12 500+ ahead.
• Scenario D — battery service in Year 2: R8 500 + R0 = R8 500. Without AC+, an out-of-warranty battery on MBP 14 is R6 000+. You're roughly break-even, but you also got 3 years of warranty cover.

The honest read: if you only ever use the warranty extension, AppleCare+ is roughly neutral. The moment a single accidental damage incident happens, it swings hard in your favour. The question becomes: how likely are you to drop, spill on, or knock your Mac at least once in three years?

For most MacBook owners — students, freelancers, sales reps, anyone who carries the laptop daily — the honest answer is "more likely than not." For someone whose MacBook lives on a desk at home and never leaves, the answer is "probably no."

The 60-day window — buy at checkout if you can

Apple gives you exactly 60 days from your Mac's original purchase date to add AppleCare+. After day 60 the option disappears from your Apple ID and no amount of pleading at iStore brings it back. You will see a lot of people online who missed this and had to pay R12 000 for a screen they could have had for R1 999.

Three ways to add it:

• At checkout (cleanest). When ordering your Mac from Evetech, iStore, Digicape or Apple's online store, tick the AppleCare+ option at the cart step. Bundled invoice, instant activation, no diagnostic required.
• Within 60 days via settings.apple.com. Open Settings → your Apple ID → Subscriptions on the Mac, or settings.apple.com on the web, and AppleCare+ will appear as an "add" option until day 60. Apple may run a remote diagnostic before activating.
• In-store at iStore within 60 days. Bring the Mac with you. They'll run a diagnostic, confirm no damage exists, and activate the cover.

Pre-owned and refurbished Macs: the 60-day clock runs from the original purchase date, not your purchase date. So a 6-month-old Apple refurb has the AppleCare+ window already closed unless the original buyer added it. Apple Certified Refurbished Macs often come with a fresh one-year warranty but AppleCare+ availability depends on the original window.

How AppleCare+ claims work in South Africa

Once you have the cover, the SA service network is actually decent.

Where you go: any iStore with a Genius Bar (Sandton City, Gateway, V&A Waterfront, Menlyn Park, Canal Walk, Hyde Park, Mall of Africa and ~12 others nationwide) or any Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP). There are roughly 15-20 AASPs across SA — including iStore Business centres, Digicape's service department, and a handful of independent Apple-authorised technicians in smaller centres.

What you bring: the Mac, proof of purchase (Apple keeps your AppleCare+ status linked to your Apple ID, so technically you don't need paperwork — but bring the invoice anyway), and a backup of your data. Apple wipes the Mac in most repair flows.

What happens:

• Day 1: Genius Bar diagnostic. They confirm AC+ on file, classify the issue (hardware defect vs accidental damage), and issue a service order.
• Service fee on the day if it's accidental damage — R1 999 for screen, R4 999 for other. Pay by card.
• Day 3-10: repair completed. Some MacBook Pro repairs (logic board, display assembly) get shipped to Apple's regional repair hub and can take 7-15 working days, depending on Cape Town/Johannesburg logistics.
• Collection: back to the same iStore. Tested before handover.

When to skip AppleCare+

It's not a universal yes. Here are the patterns where AppleCare+ is genuinely a poor spend:

Light-user, desk-bound MacBook. If your MacBook lives on a desk at home and travels maybe twice a year, the accidental damage cover is mostly dead weight. The warranty extension still has some value, but you can self-insure that R5 000-R8 000 risk.

Mac mini and Mac Studio. These don't have screens or batteries to fail expensively, don't get dropped, and don't get spilled on. The component failure rate on Apple Silicon desktops is genuinely low. Save the R3 000-R7 500.

You're already insured. Most SA household contents policies (Outsurance, Discovery Insure, MiWay, Santam) will cover laptop accidental damage and theft for an additional R30-R80/month. If you're already paying for that cover, AppleCare+ duplicates the accidental damage piece (though it still adds the warranty extension and battery service, which contents policies don't cover).

You're going to sell within 18 months. If you flip Macs annually for the latest model, the warranty extension goes to the next owner and you've subsidised them. Still, the AC+ does lift resale price — so calculate the net.

Old, cheap Mac mini for a media server. The maths just doesn't work on a R10 000 Mac mini with R3 000 AppleCare+ when out-of-warranty replacement is roughly R5 000 for a used unit.
