Judging a Headset by What Goes Out, Not What Comes In
Sealed cups muffle your own voice, and people compensate by drifting louder or quieter across a session. Sidetone feeds a little of the microphone back into the cups through the headset's own circuitry, which is effectively instantaneous. Monitoring routed out through the operating system and back through broadcast software is the same idea with a delay attached, and delayed feedback past roughly twenty milliseconds actively disrupts speech. Take the hardware version and switch the software one off.
On an open-back design the game leaks out of the cups and straight back into the boom, reaching the audience as a hollow doubled copy of everything you are playing.
