Will a 12th, 13th or 14th Gen Core processor fit an LGA 1851 board?

No. Intel documents the two sockets as incompatible in both directions, so a 14th Gen chip will not seat in an 800-series board and a Core Ultra 200S will not run in a 700-series one. The confusion comes from the cooler mounting, which genuinely is identical between them.

Can I carry my DDR4 memory across to this socket?

No, because there is no DDR4 version of any board in the 800-series range. The platform is DDR5 throughout, so a new kit is part of the cost of moving across rather than an optional extra to add later.

Does my existing LGA1700 cooler bolt straight on?

Yes. The mounting hole pitch, the backplate thickness and the height of the lid above the board are all unchanged, which is why Noctua and ARCTIC both confirmed their existing kits work with no new bracket. Cooler makers have since said the same holds for Intel's next socket too.

Is LGA 1851 a dead end for future processor upgrades?

Effectively yes. Intel's next desktop generation, Nova Lake, moves to the larger LGA1954 socket in the second half of 2026, which makes the Core Ultra 200S Plus chips launched in March 2026 the last parts this socket will take. Pick the processor you want to run now instead of planning a drop-in replacement.

Do these processors have usable integrated graphics?

On everything except the F-suffix models, yes, within limits. The graphics block on the desktop Core Ultra chips is a small four-core design intended for display output, video decode and a second monitor, so it will drive a desk but not a game at any serious setting. A discrete card remains the plan for anything demanding.

Does the built-in AI engine make this a Copilot+ machine?

No. The neural engine on the desktop parts is rated at roughly 13 TOPS against Microsoft's 40 TOPS threshold, so the features gated behind that badge do not switch on. Local AI work still runs perfectly well; it simply leans on the processor cores and the graphics card instead of the dedicated engine.

Why do some 800-series boards have only two memory slots?

Because the entry chipset is limited to a single module per channel, which caps those boards at two slots by design. The mid and upper tiers allow two modules per channel and normally carry four. If the plan is to start with one pair and add capacity later, that restriction alone rules the entry tier out.

LGA 1851 is the desktop socket Intel introduced with the Core Ultra 200S range, and every board on this page is built around it. It accepts those processors and the Core Ultra 200S Plus refresh that followed them, and nothing older.

Choosing one is mostly a question of what the socket imposes and what the board adds on top. DDR5 is the only memory type it will take, the cooler mounting carries over unchanged from the previous socket, and how much tuning you get is set by the chipset badge. Everything else is the vendor's choice and varies from model to model within the same tier.
