How to Choose a Network Switch
The right switch comes down to four questions: managed or unmanaged, what port speed, how much PoE power, and how many ports. Work through each below to match a switch to your home, office or business network in South Africa.
Unmanaged switches are plug-and-play: connect them and every port works, which suits homes and small offices that just need more wired connections. Managed switches add VLANs, QoS, link aggregation and SNMP monitoring, so you can segment guest, CCTV and office traffic and troubleshoot remotely. Choose managed once you need control; choose unmanaged to simply expand your network.
Gigabit (1GbE) still handles most home and office traffic. 2.5GbE is the practical 2026 upgrade - it runs on existing Cat5e cabling and matches Wi-Fi 7 access points and current motherboards. Reserve 10GbE for the backbone: NAS units, servers and switch-to-switch uplinks, where Cat6 or Cat6a cabling is recommended.
Add up the wattage of every powered device, then compare it to the switch's total power budget rather than the per-port figure.
