Setting Up a Notebook Around a Lightroom Catalogue
The catalogue, its preview folder and the Camera Raw cache are read and written constantly, so all three want the internal NVMe drive. The raw files themselves are read once at import and again at export, which an external drive handles perfectly well. Adobe does not support keeping a Lightroom Classic catalogue on a network volume, and the failures that follow are corruption rather than slowness.
A smart preview is a lossy DNG capped at 2560 pixels on its long edge, roughly a twentieth the size of the original file, and Lightroom will edit it when the original is offline. Build them before you disconnect the drive, not after. Exports still go back to the full-resolution original when the drive returns, so nothing is lost apart from the ability to inspect fine detail at 100 per cent.
Lightroom ships with a 5GB Camera Raw cache, which a single wedding fills. It holds partially decoded raw data, so an image you return to opens in develop without being reprocessed from scratch. Raising it to tens of gigabytes on a fast internal drive is one of the few free performance changes left in the application. Point it at the internal SSD if you have ever moved it to an external one.
Interactive work in the develop module is lightly threaded and rewards a high clock speed, which is why a modest quad-core with strong boost can feel sharper than a many-core chip that runs slower. Import, preview building and export are the opposite and use everything available. On a notebook the second group is also thermally limited, so sustained clocks under a long batch matter more than the peak figure on the specification sheet.
Most thin notebooks now solder their memory to the board, and LPDDR5X cannot be added later at any price. Lightroom alone is content with 16GB; the moment a round trip opens a layered file in Photoshop beside it, with a browser and a mail client still loaded, 32GB stops being a luxury. Order it at purchase or accept the ceiling for the life of the machine.
