The larger Pro chassis exists for sustained work rather than bursts. It carries a bigger battery, more cooling volume and a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR panel at 3456 by 2234, which holds 1600 nits at peak for HDR and 1000 nits for everything else. Two chips share it: M5 Pro pairs an 18-core CPU with a 20-core GPU, M5 Max keeps the CPU and doubles the graphics to 40 cores.

Memory is the decision that cannot be revisited. It sits on the chip package as one pool shared by CPU, GPU and Neural Engine - up to 64GB at 307GB/s on M5 Pro, up to 128GB at 614GB/s on M5 Max - and storage is soldered too, so both are chosen once at purchase.
