DDR5 in Laptops: What Changes and What Is Fixed
Spec sheets use consistent language once you can read it. Wording such as onboard, or memory soldered to system board, means fixed at purchase; a line reading 2 x SODIMM, or a stated maximum alongside a slot count, means it can be changed. A quoted maximum capacity identical to the shipping configuration is another strong clue. Where a listing stays ambiguous, the vendor service manual settles it.
Some thin designs use both at once: a fixed amount on the board plus a single slot for expansion. Filling that slot with a different capacity gives an uneven total, and the platform runs part of the pool paired and the remainder on one channel. It still works and it still helps, but it will not behave like a matched pair, which is worth knowing before you pick the module size.
Here the graphics chip carries its own dedicated VRAM, so the system pool serves the processor, shader compilation, asset streaming and everything sitting behind the game.
