What is the Dell G15 gaming laptop?

The Dell G15 is Dell's mainstream 15.6-inch gaming laptop line, positioned below Alienware. It pairs Intel Core or AMD Ryzen processors with dedicated NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics, a high-refresh Full HD display, and Alienware-derived Cryo-Tech cooling, aimed at gamers who want strong performance at a mid-range price.

Has Dell discontinued or renamed the G15?

In 2025 Dell simplified its consumer branding and consolidated gaming under the Alienware name, so the G-series is the established line rather than a newly launched one. You may see current 15-16 inch Dell gaming models sold under Alienware or the newer 'Dell 16' naming. G15 stock is still widely available; judge each unit on its listed specification rather than the model name.

What specs should I look for in a Dell G15?

For smooth high-refresh 1080p gaming, look for a 60-class NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU (such as an RTX 5060), a current mid-range or higher Intel Core / AMD Ryzen 7 CPU, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB or larger NVMe SSD. Pair that with the 165Hz Full HD panel to make full use of the refresh rate.

Is the Dell G15 good for AAA games?

Yes. A G15 with a current 60-class RTX GPU comfortably handles demanding AAA titles at 1080p with high settings, and NVIDIA DLSS plus frame generation helps in the heaviest games. Entry 50-class configurations are better suited to esports and lighter titles at high frame rates.

How does the Dell G15 handle heat and noise?

The G15 uses Dell's Cryo-Tech cooling, derived from Alienware, with dual fans, multiple heat pipes and a vapour chamber on higher configurations. It sustains clock speeds well during long sessions, though like most gaming laptops the fans get audible under full load. Gaming plugged in delivers the best sustained performance.

Intel or AMD in the Dell G15 - which is better?

Both perform well and the G15 ships in Core and Ryzen variants. AMD Ryzen models often deliver strong value and efficiency, while Intel Core models are competitive on raw performance. Choose based on the specific unit's price and the GPU it is paired with rather than the CPU brand alone.

Can I upgrade the RAM and storage on a Dell G15?

Most G15 models allow RAM and SSD upgrades after purchase, which lets you buy a lower-capacity configuration now and expand later. Confirm the exact slot and capacity limits for the specific model you are considering, as these vary across G15 generations.

Is the Dell G15 available in South Africa?

How to Choose a Dell G15 Gaming Laptop

The Dell G15 range covers a wide span of configurations, so the right one depends on the games you play, the resolution and frame rate you target, and how much you carry it around. Start with the GPU and CPU pairing, then match the display, memory and storage to how you actually game. Every G15 uses a 15.6-inch screen and the same Cryo-Tech cooling family, so most of your decision comes down to the internals and the panel's refresh rate.

The GPU is the single biggest factor in gaming performance. On the G15, a 50-class NVIDIA GeForce RTX card (for example an RTX 5050 or the current-generation entry tier) suits 1080p esports and lighter AAA titles, while a 60-class card (such as an RTX 5060) is the sweet spot for high-refresh 1080p gaming with room for ray tracing and DLSS. Match the GPU to the 165Hz panel: a stronger card lets you actually use that refresh rate in competitive shooters.

The G15 ships with either Intel Core or AMD Ryzen chips. A current mid-range Core or Ryzen part is enough to feed the GPU in most games; step up to a higher-tier Core or Ryzen 7 if you stream, edit video, or run heavy multitasking alongside gaming. Both platforms perform well here, so pick based on the specific model's price and the GPU it is paired with rather than brand alone.

Every G15 uses a 15.6-inch Full HD (1920x1080) screen, but refresh rates vary between roughly 120Hz and 165Hz. For fast, competitive games like Valorant or CS2, a 165Hz panel with a 3ms response time gives noticeably smoother motion. If you mostly play story-driven single-player titles, a 120Hz panel is perfectly fine and often costs less. Look for around 300 nits brightness and full sRGB coverage for punchier colour.

16GB of RAM is the practical baseline for modern gaming and comfortable multitasking; drop to 8GB only for lighter use, and consider 32GB if you also do content creation. For storage, a 512GB NVMe SSD holds a handful of large games, while 1TB is worth it if you keep a big library installed. Most G15 units use fast DDR5 memory and PCIe SSDs, and many allow a later upgrade if you buy the smaller option now.

The G15's Cryo-Tech cooling, with dual fans and multiple heat pipes (and a vapour chamber on higher configs), is a genuine strength for sustained performance. The trade-off is weight: the G15 is a solid 15.6-inch machine built for desk and LAN use rather than all-day carrying, and gaming laptops run hard on battery, so expect to game plugged in. If ultra-portability matters more than raw thermals, weigh that against a thinner design.

Because Dell has moved recent gaming models under the Alienware and Dell 16 naming, the G15 line spans a few processor and graphics generations. Judge each unit on its listed spec rather than the model number, and use the guidance below to weigh the factors that matter most for South African buyers.
