What does RTX 4090 Mobile actually refer to?

The laptop version of NVIDIA's Ada flagship, built on the AD103 die with 9,728 CUDA cores and 16GB of GDDR6 across a 256-bit bus. The desktop card sold under the same number is a different and much larger chip with 16,384 cores, 24GB of GDDR6X and a 450W power budget. In core count the mobile part lines up with a desktop RTX 4080, and it should be judged on that basis.

Does an RTX 4090 laptop get DLSS 4?

Most of it. The transformer-model upscaler, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA all came to every RTX generation, and Ada also runs single frame generation. Multi Frame Generation, which inserts up to three generated frames, requires Blackwell hardware and NVIDIA has confirmed no reduced version is coming to this generation. In practice you keep the image-quality improvements and lose the largest frame-rate multiplier.

Is 16GB of video memory still enough on this card?

Yes for gaming at 2560x1600 and for most 4K play with sensible texture settings. It is also the same capacity carried by the current second-tier mobile card, so memory is not where this generation fell behind. The pressure points are 4K high-resolution texture packs, dense 3D scenes and larger local language models, and those apply equally to newer 16GB hardware.

What kind of machine did this GPU come in?

Top-of-range 16 and 18-inch builds, because a 175W ceiling needs vapour chamber cooling and multiple fans to be worth fitting. Those machines generally came with high-core-count processors, two SO-DIMM sockets, two M.2 drive slots and fast 16:10 panels. Much of the value in one of these laptops sits in that surrounding hardware rather than in the graphics chip alone.

Should I buy previous-generation silicon at all?

It depends on what you are optimising for. If you want flagship throughput in a flagship body and can live without Multi Frame Generation, this generation is a sound purchase and the drivers are current. If you want every new NVIDIA feature over the next several years, buy into the current generation instead, because feature gating now follows the hardware line rather than the performance level.

The RTX 4090 Laptop GPU was NVIDIA's top mobile part of the Ada generation: 9,728 CUDA cores, 16GB of GDDR6 on a 256-bit bus, and up to 150W of power with a further 25W of Dynamic Boost. Blackwell has since replaced it at the top of the range, which makes this a previous-generation card rather than a current one.

That does not make it slow. Ada remains fully supported by current drivers, and a machine that feeds this chip its full power budget still sits above a great deal of what ships in mid-tier laptops today. What you trade away is Multi Frame Generation and the newer memory technology. What you get in return is a former top-of-range chassis, with the cooling, panel and build that came with it.
