The 16-inch class has largely replaced 15.6-inch as the default large laptop, and most new panels have moved to a 16:10 aspect ratio that adds vertical height for documents, timelines and web pages. Stepping up to 17 or 18 inches buys more screen and cooling headroom for sustained performance, at the cost of weight and battery life. The right size depends on how often the machine actually leaves your desk: pick 16 inches if you travel with it, and 17 to 18 inches if it mostly stays put.
