External SSD marketing talks about 40 Gbps and "blazing speeds." Your laptop, almost certainly, does not. Before you spend a cent, look at what port you actually have — that's the ceiling for everything that follows.

USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 1050 MB/s is faster than 99% of users will ever need. It loads a 50GB Lightroom catalogue in 50 seconds. It transfers a 10GB phone backup in 10. The only reason to chase USB4 is if you regularly move 100GB+ of video footage and your laptop has the port to match.
