Read the processor part number rather than the arrival date. A model can appear as a fresh listing for many months while carrying silicon from the previous cycle, particularly at the value end where chassis run long. If the processor belongs to the current platform generation, the rest of the design almost always follows it.

Only if a launch is genuinely weeks away. Laptop platforms follow an annual rhythm, announced in January and filtering into retail from late in that quarter through the middle of the year, so there is always something better roughly six months out. Buy when the machine you need exists, and ignore the roadmap beyond the current announcement cycle.

Efficiency and integrated graphics far more than headline processor speed. Intel's move to a new manufacturing process brought a rebuilt graphics architecture with it, AMD raised clocks and neural throughput on an existing core design, and Qualcomm's second-generation Arm chips closed much of the gap on sustained performance. For most buyers that translates into longer unplugged runtime and playable frame rates without a discrete GPU.

Not by default, but this year distorts the comparison. Memory prices climbed steeply through 2026, so two machines a generation apart can be priced closer than expected while their RAM capacities differ. A previous-generation laptop with 32GB frequently serves better than a current one cut back to 16GB to hit a price.

Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 or newer, and Thunderbolt 5 or USB4 on the upper tiers. These sit on the mainboard and cannot be retrofitted, so they are a good tell. A machine advertising a current processor alongside Wi-Fi 6 is usually an older chassis with new silicon dropped into it, which is not automatically a bad buy but should be priced as one.

The threshold is a neural processor rated at 40 TOPS or more, which unlocks Microsoft's on-device AI features. It matters if you want those features running locally without sending data off the machine. It changes nothing for gaming, where the graphics processor does the work, so do not pay a premium for the badge alone.

Check aspect ratio before resolution. Taller 16:10 panels became standard on well-specified machines and show noticeably more of a document than the older 16:9 shape at the same diagonal. A 1366x768 or 16:9 1080p panel appearing on a 2026 listing signals a body that has been in production for several years, whatever is inside it.

Sealed retail units with the manufacturer warranty stated on the product page, the original charger, and Windows pre-installed where the model includes it.
