A 15.6-inch panel measures roughly 345mm across and 194mm tall in the traditional 16:9 shape, which is why the body around it works out close to the width of an A4 page turned on its side. That width is enough for a full keyboard with a number pad, two fans, a full-length drive and a battery that does not have to be shoehorned in. It is the reason this diagonal outsells every other one.

The picture changed when 16:10 arrived. A 16-inch 16:10 panel is close to the same width as a 15.6-inch 16:9 one but around 20mm taller, so the newer size fits a similar footprint while handing back vertical space. Compare the two directly rather than assuming the larger number demands a larger bag.
